For those who don’t live in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia), our Metro system has been in need of major repairs for years. This summer, WMATA (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority) rolled out their big SafeTRACK initiative to fix their shit. And it’s sucked.

Weekend hours that used to extend to 3am now end at midnight which has made a slight dent in the night life. Trains often single track during rush hour. People are getting to work and home much later than they expect. Ridership is down and the system is bleeding money. But honestly, they needed to do something. And as hard as SafeTRACK has been on all of us, it’s better than letting the system further decay. No, it’s not perfect. But they are trying.

With all that in mind, if someone actually pulled out a sound system during rush hour a fight is more likely to break out than a dance party. DC commuters are fed up with this shit and are usually too tired to get their groove on. Still, I thought it’d be fun to let the commuters of the YP blow off some steam.

SOFT RELAUNCH

So. Back again. I shouldn’t have left you. But I needed to get a whole lot of shit sorted. And part of that is trying out this new format for YP. I’m going to try my best to update every Friday, but if paid work gets in the way that schedule may slide. Thank you for everyone who has checked up on the site occasionally throughout this hiatus. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to bring it back, but I think I’ve found a way that might work.

I’m going to be drawing things in this Sunday strip format with intention of completing a full idea rather than drawing things out in long story arcs. Storylines are great for fans who are familiar with the characters, but it can be daunting for new readers. So I’m going for a single idea per update. And they won’t always star the regular cast. Some will be commentary on current events or just silly shit that comes out of my head. And I might try to do a few Great Kahuna Bot V things. We’ll see.

I’m also going to try to push my Patreon more. Patrons got to see a sneak peak of this update during the week and get a full 600dpi version of every update that’s suitable for printing. If there’s enough interest in these One Shots, I might also set up a thing where you can buy individual prints of comics if that’s your thing.

So we’re back to our regularly scheduled programming!

There’s a sign that reads: THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE DURING OUR SAFE TRACK MAINTENANCE PERIOD

PANEL 2

Interior of a metro stop. TARA and KANE are riding the escalator down to a very crowded platform.

TARA

Does an overcrowded platform say “Safe”  to you?

KANE

Maybe it’s “safe” as in “vault” and they’re hoarding workers to power the great siege engine of corporate greed.

PANEL 3

KANE fishes something out of his bag.

TARA

Cor. That got kinda real.

KANE

Hey, I wanna try something.

PANEL 4

KANE hooks up his phone to a portable speaker.

TARA

This seems like a bad idea.

PANEL 5

KANE swipes on his phone to the track “I Know You Got Soul” by Eric B. and Rakim

PANEL 6

KANE holds up the speaker as it starts blaring the lyrics.

PANEL 7

Three commuters turn to look.

PANEL 8

KANE flashes a smile and points at them.

KANE

Dance party.

PANEL 9

The commuters nod.

PANEL 10

A crowd forms around the three commuters as they break dance.

This video is sort of a subtweet about some art twitter discourse. But I wanted to respond in video form rather than in written form so that you wouldn't misinterpret my words. Also not linking the discourse directly because I don't want to dogpile on the inspiration for my thoughts. But here are three ideas that I wanted to share with artists for us to keep in our brains as we go into the new year.
