Iron Spoon Brigade [Comic]
Posted January 6, 2014 at 12:00 am
In researching this little origin story, I found out there there actually was a historical Chinese general by the name of Tso or Zuo Zongtang.  I have no idea if his field cooks were any good or indeed, if he had any field cooks.  Buuuuuut that's what I'm going with.

If things go as planned, this week I'll finish up this first half of the Black Spoon arc.  Then I'll run the filler stuff about the 47 Bronin.  After that, I have a handful of guesties to run.  And by then, I should have a proper buffer or at least some idea of what it's like to comic with a baby around to start regular comics once again.

In theory.

This story was thoroughly researched for undeniable historical accuracy.

PANEL 1

A long general stands holding a halberd.

KILLER QUEEN (Caption)

Originally known as the Iron Spoon Brigade, they served as field cooks for General Tso Tsung-T'ang's army in the Qing Dynasty.

PANEL 2

Two soldiers drool over a rather large chicken

KILLER QUEEN (Caption)

His soldiers were the most loyal due in large part to the wondrous meals prepared by the Iron Spoons.

PANEL 3

A scene of battle. A soldier swings his sword, his eyes burning red.

KILLER QUEEN (Caption)

It was said that the General's invincible army fought with demonic fury, as if they were possessed.

PANEL 4

In the foreground is General Tso shrouded in shadow. Above him are three Iron Spoons.

KILLER QUEEN (Caption)

Rumors spread that the Iron Spoons were the true source of General Tso's might.

PANEL 5

A lone Iron Spoon looks off into the distance.

KILLER QUEEN (Caption)

When the General passed away, the Iron Spoons went underground. That's when things get really interesting.

This video is sort of a subtweet about some art twitter discourse. But I wanted to respond in video form rather than in written form so that you wouldn't misinterpret my words. Also not linking the discourse directly because I don't want to dogpile on the inspiration for my thoughts. But here are three ideas that I wanted to share with artists for us to keep in our brains as we go into the new year.
