I've never really been a fan of the "Jack of all trades" figure of speech. Well, really, it's the second bit that I have a problem with. I think it's more than possible to be well versed in many things and have mastery over all of them. Or many of them. Or more than one of them.

So my brain is kind of bad with keeping details, but I think it's a zen philosophy that if you master one thing, you can go on to master many things. Please correct me if I have this completely wrong, but it's an idea that I read somewhere that planted itself in my brain and has sort of guided the way I view things. To demonstrate this theory, I will use my good friend Johnny "Rockstar" Shryock as a perfect example.

Johnny is known as "Rockstar" to his friends and family because he's the best goddamn musician we know. He can play just about anything that makes music and a few things that were never meant to make a pleasant sound. His mastery of the guitar is legendary and the only reason you haven't heard of him is that none of the bands he has ever been in were ever able to keep up with his musical perfectionism. Johnny is a musical genius and I mean that in every sense of the word. But it's not just his playing. His audio recording and engineering skills boggle the mind. He can do it all.

Ah, but there's more.

Johnny is also an expert martial artist. He's studied Tang Su Do for years and once he got his black belt, he branched out to learn Bando, Escrima, and Kung Fu. He's one of the most well rounded martial artists I know. And if his name sounds familiar to long time readers, Johnny was the one who directed Illuminate: A Martial Arts Experience.

I'm not quite done embarrassing my friend.

You might think that music and martial arts would be enough to fill a person's days. Oh no. Johnny has decided to tackle another completely unrelated field. Headshot photography. Already sporting an impressive client list, you can see Johnny's headshots on the resumes of many DC area actors.

Johnny Shryock, Jack of All Trades. Period.

This video is sort of a subtweet about some art twitter discourse. But I wanted to respond in video form rather than in written form so that you wouldn't misinterpret my words. Also not linking the discourse directly because I don't want to dogpile on the inspiration for my thoughts. But here are three ideas that I wanted to share with artists for us to keep in our brains as we go into the new year.
